Education & Outreach – Summer 2005

Graduate Students Visit the Facility and Perform Lidar and Radar Experiments

Pictured at the edge of the Inland Ice are (L to R): John Geiszler, U. of Colorado, Boulder; Loren Chang, U. of Colorado, Boulder; Asti Bhatt, Cornell U.; Ashley Wiren, U. of Colorado, Boulder; and Chunmei Chang, U. of Colorado, Boulder. Not pictured is Stan Briczinski from Pennsylvania State University.

Stan Briczinski was at the site as a GSRE participant for 17 days to try and detect meteor head echoes. John Geiszler was at the site as a GSRE participant for two months assisting with lidar measurements during the NLC season.

Asti Bhatt performed ISR experiments in an effort to detect the gyro-line. Asti has performed similar experiments at Arecibo successfully, but it's unknown if the geometry at higher latitudes, combined with less sensitivity, will allow this detection.

Loren, Chunmei and Ashley used the ISR to demonstrate basic remote sensing techniques, including system calibration using sun tracking, moon bounce and tracking a radio star.

The Colorado students came with their advisor, Jeffrey Thayer, and Asti came with Craig Heinselman.
